I interviewed my friend Lisa to discuss her thoughts on fashion
and her own personal style. Enjoy!
S: Where do you get inspiration from in terms of your own
personal fashion and style? Do you have any celebrity fashion icons?
L: Audrey Hepburn. It’s probably going to sound really cliché
and outdated for my age, because I’m in my 20s. I don’t know, she just put
things together without even trying. She had this timeless, classic elegance. I’m
really going to emphasize on my size. I’m not a regular sized celebrity. So I
might like their look and their style, but am I really going to get what they
have on in my size? With that said I do really admire Jennifer Hudson’s style.
I also love Blake Lively’s style. Love
her! Love her style! She has that bohemian LA look. I’m not going to lie guys,
I love LA style. Gosh there’s so many. But again, I like it but can I get it in
my size? I just kind of go in the stores, see what I like, and pick it up.
S: Describe your personal style.
L: My personal style is trendy but comfortable. I’m not the
type to wear heels all the time. I work in a corporate environment that
requires me to wear heels and it sucks. I can’t do it. It’s funny I have heels.
I love how they look, I just hate how they feel. I love them. They’re pretty to
look at but they catch dust in my closet. Kudos to my girls that wear heels, but
I can’t do it. I love my flats, I love my sandals, I love my sneakers. So
trendy but comfortable pretty much.
S: When did you come into your own in terms of your fashion?
How has your personal style changed or evolved?
L: Honestly guys it wasn’t until first year that I really
came into my own. First year for me, I was 17 or 18. I’m now 22 going on 23. I’ll
put it out there right now. I’ve been attending uniform schools ever since I
was 7. It was the same black pants and just different coloured tops really. So
I really got accustomed to it. I really didn’t care as much because I kind of
looked like everyone else and I really wasn’t trying to impress anybody. My
first real retail job was at Nine West, a really high end retail store, and I
was one of the youngest ones there. I guess being around them made me want to
try and experiment with different things. That’s kind of how it all happened.
After my first retail job and after my first year at university. I started experimenting
with colour because I was afraid of colour. I started to experiment with
different brands because different brands of clothing fit differently.
S:What are your favourite spring /summer trends this year?
L: I love the pastel colours! Pastel colours all day every
day. Like L.O.V.E. Love! I love the animal prints and the bright colours. I’m
enjoying experimenting with the bright colours. I never thought that it was
something that I could pull off because I’m a darker person and I’m not trying
to play into stereotypes. But it’s important to try colours that work for you.
I also love the floral prints.
S: You talked about representing for full figured women.
What advice do you have for full figured women that want to experiment with
different pieces? Because I may not have that experience/background as a full
figured woman, but I know as a black woman what it’s like when you look at
images of beauty that are depicted in the media and it’s not you. Whether it be
because of your skin tone or hair or whatever. You don’t see that same representation
in terms of fashion and clothing. So, do you have any advice there?
L: A year ago I had a friend who’s full figured like myself. And
she had a quote that really stuck with me. She said ‘‘Lis, there’s a difference
between being full figured and wearing clothes that are not full figured.’’ For
fuller figured ladies, I guess you know what I mean, and for those that aren’t
full figured I’m going to explain it. When you’re full figured it’s difficult
finding clothes and it’s been something I’ve had to struggle with. I mean
mainstream fashion just doesn’t seem to like us. Even when they do it’s just an
arm and a leg to spend. I mean you make the clothes, make it affordable. Being
full figured doesn’t mean you don’t have to be trendy. You’re full figured
yeah. Buy clothes that fit your body, I can’t stress that enough. My advice for
full figured ladies, I’m not going to tell you how to dress just because style
differs. Body sizes are completely different, don’t know what your personal
taste is. There are amazing online stores. And it sucks that they’re online.
Like I don’t know what we have to do to make stores really available for walking
in. There are excellent websites. (http://www.maximumwoman.com, www.eshakti.com, www.torrid.com). I’m full figured. Sometimes I
have to buy things that are a little big for me and tweak them so that they
work for me, a few alterations. I’m short in stature, five feet. So sometimes I
have to tweak
